Critical Approaches to Religion & Gnosticism Course
idiosemantics.jpg

There have been periods of relative popularity of the associations of Gnosis and Gnosticism, and a recent rise of the use the terms of Gnosticism in an idiosematic way: that is, disconnected or only very loosely connected to the Gnostic tradition that stretches back to classical antiquity. As one can use common words to mean different things, an uncommon word may be used in an unusual way without notice.

Listings here reflect some uses of the word "Gnosis" in other ways than those employed in the Gnostic tradition. It is not intended to be exhaustive.

Misappropriation, Misuse, and Misapplication of "Gnostic" and associated terms to describe that which is not related to the meaning of these terms by mainstream scholarship.

Individuals, Organizations, and Movements that name themselves Gnostic but use a different meaning of that and other associated terms than those used in mainstream scholarship. Individuals involved in these groups are welcome to participate in the Institute. However, they should be aware that what these organizations mean when using this terminology is often quite different from that of mainstream Gnostic studies, and so may have little to do with the approach of the Gnosis Institute.
